CJI Surya Kant Rejects INDIA Bloc Meeting Over Vote Chori Charge

· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Supreme Court has reiterated that it should not be dragged into political battlefields following Chief Justice Surya Kant's decision to turn down a private meeting request from opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. The bench, which also includes Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, stated in an email response that the judiciary is duty-bound to hear petitions against CEC Gyanesh Kumar and those challenging SIR on priority. At a hearing on Monday, senior advocate Atmaram Nadkarni and SCBA president Pradeep Rai urged the court to address how protests and preventive measures are obstructing lawyers from working. The Supreme Court agreed to list the petitions for hearing on Tuesday alongside pleas from opposition MPs M A Baby, Manoj Jha, and Menaka Guruswamy accusing police of using excessive force. CJI Surya Kant emphasised that democratic institutions must be allowed to function peacefully without impediments to the movement of lawyers and litigants.

Why it matters

The Supreme Court's stance reinforces the boundary between the judiciary and political disputes, ensuring that court proceedings and legal representation remain unaffected by ongoing protests.
