CJI Surya Kant Says Juvenile Justice Phrase Describes Circumstance, Not Identity

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated in New Delhi on Saturday that the phrase 'child in conflict with the law' describes a circumstance rather than an identity and urged that minors' names be kept out of news and the internet. Speaking at the National Annual Stakeholders Consultation marking ten years of the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015, the CJI emphasised that old records must be destroyed on time so past actions do not shadow a young person's future. He noted that the statute makes a wager that a juvenile given a second chance is far more likely to become a productive member of society than one branded a criminal. The event was organised by the Supreme Court's Juvenile Justice Committee in association with UNICEF. The CJI also observed that the difficult circumstances these young people face often stem from poverty, strained families, and cut-short schooling.

Why it matters

The Chief Justice's remarks reinforce legal protections for juveniles and stress the importance of privacy and true social reintegration without stigma.
