CJI Urges Lawyers To Keep Supreme Court Free From Politics
· India · Hindustan Times
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday directed lawyers to ensure that ongoing protests in Delhi do not obstruct the functioning of the Supreme Court. The CJI urged the Supreme Court Bar Association to ensure that the movement of lawyers, court staff, and litigants remains unhindered amid the demonstrations. While acknowledging the right to democratic protest, Justice Kant stated that such activities should be restricted to designated areas. This follows a special bench order from the previous day aimed at protecting the right to peaceful protest while maintaining public services and access to justice. The court is scheduled to hear further matters related to the protests on Tuesday.
Why it matters
The CJI's intervention aims to balance the constitutional right to protest with the necessity of maintaining uninterrupted access to the judicial system for litigants and staff.
