Class 8 Student’s Body Found In Delhi Drain After Four-Day Search

The body of 15-year-old Mithun Kumar, a Class 8 student from UP’s Budaun, was recovered on Tuesday afternoon from a clogged drain in South-East Delhi’s Jasola, four days after he fell in while on his way to school on August 22. The drain, running close to Shaheen Bagh police station, was buried under years of piled-up plastic bottles, construction debris, clothes, and tyres, which blocked the search by NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority. Frustrated by the lack of progress, his father Awadhesh, a labourer, entered the drain himself on Sunday and began removing garbage by hand. A district administration official said the body was stuck in a swamp of debris, forcing teams to clear the blockage before recovery around 1:15 pm. The body was sent to AIIMS for post-mortem, and the family said final rites will be held in Budaun.
Why it matters
The incident has put a spotlight on the civic failure that left a heavily used South-East Delhi drain choked with garbage for years, endangering residents and schoolchildren who walk past it daily. The state government is now under pressure to explain why the drain was not desilted and whether faster clearing could have saved Mithun.
