Clearlake Capital Takes Full Control of Chelsea Football Club

· Sports · BBC News, BBC Sport, Financial Times

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter have sold their respective 12.8% stakes in the club to majority owner Clearlake Capital. Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss also divested his 12.8% share, granting Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano total ownership. Boehly, who led the 2022 acquisition of the club from Roman Abramovich for £2.3bn, will step down from his role as chairman. The departure follows reports of internal friction within the ownership group that emerged earlier in 2024. Under the current leadership, the club has undergone significant player turnover and appointed Xabi Alonso as manager for the current season.

Why it matters

The consolidation of ownership ends a period of internal management tension and provides Clearlake Capital with unilateral control over the club's future infrastructure and stadium development plans.
