Clinical Trial Shows Improved Survival with Localised Prostate Cancer Treatment
· Technology · EMJ
A clinical trial has found that men with localised prostate cancer who received radiation therapy alongside androgen deprivation therapy survived significantly longer than those receiving hormonal treatment alone. The five-year survival rate for the combination group reached 82 percent, compared to 66 percent in the standard hormonal therapy group. Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology and collaborating hospitals conducted the study across three major cancer centres. The trial tracked 540 patients over a six-year period, with results presented at the European Association of Urology annual meeting.
Why it matters
Thousands of Indian men diagnosed with localised prostate cancer each year could gain several additional years of life through this combined approach, potentially reducing prostate cancer mortality in the country.
