CM Vijay Scraps Parandur Airport Project Over Environmental Concerns

· India · Hindustan Times, Zee News, India Today

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has officially cancelled the proposed second Chennai airport project in Parandur, Kancheepuram, citing environmental risks to local water bodies. The project, originally announced by his predecessor M K Stalin in 2022, faced a year of protests from local residents concerned about their livelihoods and the potential loss of agricultural land. Vijay, who joined these protests in January 2025, stated that his government prioritizes environmental protection. The Chief Minister confirmed that the state will now identify suitable alternative sites for the new airport to meet the growing industrial and passenger needs of the region. Meanwhile, the existing Meenambakkam airport will undergo expansion, including a new passenger terminal, to increase its annual handling capacity to 55 million passengers.

Why it matters

The decision halts a ₹20,000 crore infrastructure project, impacting long-term aviation capacity planning for Chennai and shifting the focus toward expanding the existing Meenambakkam facility.
