CNG, Hybrid, and EV Sales Overtake Petrol in India

Cleaner-fuel vehicles including CNG, hybrids, and EVs accounted for 42% of India's passenger vehicle retail sales in August 2026, surpassing petrol-powered cars for the first time. Petrol's market share fell to a record low of 41%, down from 46% a year earlier. Overall retail sales grew 16% year-on-year, driven by improved affordability following recent GST rate cuts. Electric vehicle sales specifically rose 52% to reach 30,700 units for the month.
