Coal to Remain Central to India's Energy Mix Until 2047, Says CIL CMD B Sairam
· Business · LiveMint, Zee News
Coal India Ltd chairman and managing director B Sairam states that coal will remain the backbone of India's energy mix until 2047, driven by rising industrialization, urbanization, and continuous power demand. Supplies to the power sector rose 17.5% to 49.77 million tonnes in July FY27 from 42.35 million tonnes a year earlier, while non-regulated sector supplies grew 21% to 14.42 million tonnes. Coal India has set its production target for FY27 lower at 815 million tonnes compared with 875 million tonnes last year due to high opening coal stocks. Sairam notes that the West Asia war has increased input costs, which could keep the company's profitability broadly flat for the year. Additionally, the company plans to list its subsidiaries Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd during the current fiscal year following the successful listings of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd and Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Ltd.
Why it matters
This decision directly impacts India's power sector, industrial consumers, and investors as Coal India prepares to list major subsidiaries and navigates rising input costs amidst strong electricity demand.
