CodeYogi founder Prashant Chaudhary received the fifth Rohini Nayyar Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Rural Development in New Delhi, presented by former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant. Chaudhary’s foundation has taught AI and technology skills to over 3.5 lakh students across nine states and 120 districts, reaching learners through family smartphones in Indian languages. He plans to donate the Rs 10 lakh cash prize to expand the foundation’s reach. The award honors Dr Rohini Nayyar, a key architect of MGNREGA, who died in 2021. Chaudhary, IIT Delhi graduate and first from his village Bhagwanpur near Meerut to enter IIT, credited his former teacher Mita Singh for inspiring his journey.
Why it matters
The prize and its donation will directly benefit thousands of rural students by funding free AI and tech training programs accessible without computers or English proficiency. The recognition highlights a scalable model that can be replicated in other under‑served regions, potentially improving employment prospects for millions. Amitabh Kant’s presence underscores government support for grassroots tech education initiatives.
