Congress Alleges PM Fears Youth After Report Flags Gen Z Voter Enrolment Pause
· India · India Today, Zee News
A political controversy has emerged in New Delhi following a media report indicating that the annual special summary revision of electoral rolls has been stalled since 2024. The routine exercise, managed by the Election Commission of India to enrol newly eligible 18-year-old voters, has not been announced for the 2026-27 cycle. The delay is reportedly driven by disagreements within the poll panel between Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The opposition Congress party has criticized the ruling administration, alleging the Prime Minister is apprehensive about Gen Z voters. The ECI previously rolled out special intensive revisions in states like Bihar, which disrupted the decades-long convention of annual summary revisions under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
Why it matters
Delays in updating electoral rolls directly impact millions of young Indians turning 18, raising questions about voter enfranchisement and transparency in the poll panel.
