Congress Candidate for Nandigram By-Poll Sent to Judicial Custody
· India · Hindustan Times, India Today
A court in Haldia, East Midnapore, has sent Congress candidate Milan Pradhan to judicial custody until October 3. Pradhan was arrested in connection with four non-bailable warrants related to murder and abduction cases dating back to 2007. While the arrest does not disqualify him from contesting the Nandigram assembly by-election scheduled for October 6, he will be unable to campaign for the seat. State Congress president Subhankar Sarkar urged voters to protest the arrest through the ballot box. Police stated that Pradhan had been absconding for 19 years following the farmland acquisition agitation.
Why it matters
The arrest effectively sidelines the Congress candidate from campaigning in the Nandigram by-election, potentially altering the electoral dynamics of the constituency.
