Congress Files Police Complaints Against Bageshwar Baba Over Bengali Food Habits

· India · Indian Express, Telegraph India, The Hindu

The West Bengal unit of the Congress party has filed police complaints against Bageshwar Dham chief priest Dhirendra Krishna Shastri over his remarks regarding Bengali food habits during Durga Puja. Shastri had urged people not to cook or eat fish or meat during the festival, labeling those who did as fraud, which sparked widespread political reactions in the state. Pradeep Prasad, president of the South Kolkata District Congress, filed a complaint at Bhabanipur Police Station seeking an immediate FIR, while Central Kolkata District Congress president Manas Sarkar submitted a parallel complaint via email to the Kolkata Police. The opposition party alleged that Shastri's speech contained divisive remarks targeting Bengali identity and threatened social harmony. The controversy follows comments made earlier by West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya regarding the religious appeal.

Why it matters
