Congress Kerala X post urges CJI Surya Kant to resign; party distances itself after legal notice
· India · The Hindu, The Independent
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph distanced the party on October 27 from a deleted post on the Congress Kerala X handle that demanded Chief Justice of India Surya Kant resign after he declined to meet an INDIA bloc delegation led by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge on October 12. The post said if law and order was not the CJI's domain, he should resign so a replacement could be found. Supreme Court Bar Association joint secretary Meeneesh Dubey issued a legal notice to Joseph seeking a public apology, an open reprimand of the author, preservation of electronic logs, and warned of criminal contempt proceedings if demands were not met within a week. Joseph said the person responsible had been removed from their party position. The KPCC digital media cell previously drew controversy in September 2025 with a post equating "Beedis and Biharis" during the Bihar election campaign.
Why it matters
The episode exposes a ruling state party's social media cell attacking the sitting Chief Justice of India, triggering a formal legal threat from the Supreme Court Bar Association and forcing the state unit into a public climbdown.
