Congress Leader Chenthi Anil Arrested for Waylaying Chief Minister Satheesan's Convoy

· India · The Hindu, NDTV

Thiruvananthapuram police arrested District Congress Committee member Anil Kumar, known as Chenthi Anil, in the early hours of Saturday after his group blocked Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan's convoy. The incident occurred on Friday evening in the Sreekaryam police station limits as the Chief Minister travelled toward Kazhakuttam to attend Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi celebrations at Chempazhanthy. Mr Anil and other protesters had waved the convoy down and allegedly misbehaved with the Chief Minister after he stepped out to speak with them. The protest stemmed from the Chief Minister declining an invitation to attend a separate Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi celebration planned at Chenthi, which had not been part of his official schedule due to intelligence inputs. Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee president in-charge N. Sakthan stated that Mr Anil would be suspended from the party immediately.

Why it matters

The arrest and impending party suspension of a local Congress leader following a confrontation with the Chief Minister expose internal party tensions in Kerala. The incident underscores security protocols surrounding high-level state convoys and political disputes over official itineraries.
