Congress-Led States Plan Supreme Court Challenge to Mining Law

State governments governed by the Congress party are preparing to challenge the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, in the Supreme Court. Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh have confirmed their intent to oppose the law, while discussions are ongoing with the Jharkhand government. The central government passed the legislation on August 13, which restricts states from levying taxes on mineral rights and mineral-bearing lands. Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy stated the law aims for uniform mineral rates across the country and does not interfere with state autonomy, but opposition leaders argue it violates federal principles.
