Congress MPs to Petition President Over Haldwani Purification Row
· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times
Thirty-two Congress MPs from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities have decided to petition President Droupadi Murmu regarding an alleged 'purification yajna' held in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. The ritual reportedly occurred on August 11, three days after a public meeting addressed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The MPs described the event as a grave assault on the dignity of SC and ST communities and a violation of constitutional values. During a meeting at the party headquarters, they resolved to form a parliamentary forum to address issues concerning these communities and demand appropriate action. Party leaders have previously called for an FIR to be registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against those responsible.
Why it matters
The petition escalates a local controversy into a national parliamentary issue, forcing a formal response regarding the protection of SC and ST rights in Uttarakhand.
