Congress Nandigram Candidate Milan Pradhan Gets Interim Bail in 2007 Murder Cases

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday granted three weeks of interim bail to Milan Pradhan, the Congress candidate for the upcoming Nandigram Assembly bypoll, in connection with murder cases stemming from the 2007 land agitation. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed Pradhan to surrender before the Haldia court on October 21 ahead of the October 6 bypoll. Pradhan was arrested on September 18, hours after the Trinamool Congress candidate withdrew from the race and party chief Mamata Banerjee announced support for him. The charges against Pradhan involve six cases from two decades ago across Nandigram and Khejuri, where he and other co-accused were members of the Bhumi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee. While Pradhan was listed as absconding in chargesheets, his counsel noted that the TMC government had attempted to withdraw these cases in 2021 before the High Court ordered them reopened. Families of the victims await closure as other co-accused, including prominent local leaders, remain unpunished
