Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Questions Centre Over Manipur Violence
· India · Indian Express
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the BJP-led Central government over the continuing violence in Manipur, calling the bloodshed a grave indictment of its failure to protect citizens and ensure law and order. Kharge's remarks followed recent incidents, including the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old Kuki-Zo community man in Kangpokpi district and the killing of three Meitei men in Imphal East district. He noted that over 300 lives have been lost and 24,530 people have been forced into relief camps since the conflict began in May 2023. Kharge posed three questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the efficacy of the Peace Committee established in June 2023.
Why it matters
The prolonged ethnic violence in Manipur directly impacts thousands of displaced civilians living in relief camps and raises persistent concerns over security and governance in the sensitive border state.
