Congress Questions Govt Silence Over US Envoy's Remark On Rubio's Visit
· India · Times of India, The Hindu
The Congress has questioned the Centre's silence regarding US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's upcoming visit to India and US Ambassador Sergio Gor's statement that US officials expect external affairs minister S Jaishankar to meet Rubio in Mumbai. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh described Gor's remark as extraordinary, asking why the announcement of the external affairs minister's domestic engagements was left to a foreign diplomat rather than the Ministry of External Affairs. Ramesh also recalled that India first learned of the halt to Operation Sindoor from Rubio on May 10, 2025, rather than official domestic channels. Rubio is scheduled to visit India from October 17 to 22 to strengthen energy cooperation, with stops in Samarkand, Mumbai, and Jamnagar. New Delhi has not yet formally announced the US Secretary of State's visit.
Why it matters
The controversy highlights growing domestic political friction over diplomatic protocol and transparency in India-US relations, particularly regarding high-profile foreign visits announced by overseas officials.
