The Congress Working Committee reaffirmed its historical 1937 decision to sing only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram at party programmes. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal stated during a press conference in New Delhi that the stance follows a resolution originally backed by Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Sardar Patel. The decision comes in response to BJP criticism and police complaints filed against Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi in Delhi and Karnataka. The complaints allege disrespect toward the National Song after leaders were seen speaking during its recitation at the AICC headquarters on Independence Day. Party leadership defended the practice, maintaining that there is no confusion regarding the established convention.
