Congress Rejects Amit Shah's Vande Mataram Charge as Political Diversion
· India · The Hindu, India Today, Zee News
The Congress party has strongly rebutted Union Home Minister Amit Shah's charge that leadership insulted the National Song Vande Mataram during Independence Day celebrations. The controversy erupted after footage from the AICC headquarters in New Delhi showed Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi gesturing towards party president Mallikarjun Kharge while the song was being played. Addressing a public gathering in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, Mr. Shah accused Ms. Gandhi of asking the Congress president to stop the song midway and demanded an apology. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh dismissed the allegation as an attempt to divert attention from pressing issues. Meanwhile, Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal maintained in Kollam, Kerala, that the controversy arose out of a misunderstanding.
Why it matters
