The Congress party has accused the BJP of exhibiting a casteist nature after Uttarakhand BJP chief Mahendra Bhatt defended an alleged purification ritual conducted at Ramlila Maidan in Haldwani. The site was reportedly cleansed after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a gathering there on August 8. Mr. Bhatt dismissed Opposition criticism by asserting that the venue had been polluted by inappropriate slogans. Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal stated that Union Minister J.P. Nadda's earlier expression of regret in the Rajya Sabha was merely an eyewash. Party leaders have demanded that the ruling BJP sack Mr. Bhatt and take strict criminal action against those involved.
