Congress Slams Modi Govt Over OBC Undercount in Census 2027

· India · India Today, The Hindu

Congress has publicly challenged the BJP‑led central government, accusing it of attempting to undercount Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the upcoming Census 2027. It says the use of an open‑ended caste column instead of a predefined list can dilute OBC figures. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh cited the 2011 Socio‑Economic and Caste Census (SECC), where the government preferred a drop‑down system, calling it “ideal.” The party also charged the Modi administration with excluding an OBC category from the 2027 questionnaire, a claim the government has not addressed. Activists such as Aniruddh Singh Vidrohi and Yogendra Yadav have called for a standard caste registry and codes to ensure accurate enumeration. The debate is unfolding as Census 2027, scheduled to enumerate the population nationally, approaches its start date.

Why it matters

The count of OBCs determines reservation entitlements and political representation. An undercount could reduce access to government seats and benefits for OBC communities.
