Consumer Commission Orders Refund for Failed Placement Guarantee
· India · Indian Express, Times of India
A Gurdaspur consumer commission has directed a private education company to refund ₹84,960 to an MBA graduate who did not receive the promised job placement. The commission ruled that the company's advertisement of a “100% placement guarantee” constituted an unfair trade practice when interpreted merely as profile forwarding. In addition to the refund, the company must pay ₹10,000 for mental harassment and ₹5,000 for litigation costs. The bench noted that the company failed to clearly disclose that its service was limited to recruitment assistance rather than a guaranteed job offer. The complainant had enrolled in a six-month online AI product management course.
Why it matters
This ruling sets a legal precedent for consumers to hold private education providers accountable for misleading marketing claims regarding job placement guarantees.
