Consumer Court Orders Insurer to Pay Rs 70 Lakh for Burnt BMW

The Maharashtra state consumer commission has ordered United India Insurance Company to pay Rs 70 lakh to a BMW owner whose car was destroyed by fire after being left parked on a highway. The vehicle, owned by Ravikant S Patil, suffered a tyre puncture late on March 8, 2012, prompting the driver to lock it and travel to Solapur in another vehicle before it was found burnt the next morning. The insurer rejected the original claim by citing condition 4 of the policy, arguing that the car was left unattended without proper precautions. However, the commission ruled in favour of the owner on September 16, 2026, ordering the payout alongside 7 percent annual interest from the rejection date. The ruling also includes Rs 50,000 for mental agony and harassment, plus Rs 25,000 toward litigation costs.
