Coroner Urges Locked Volume on Baby Monitors After Infant Death

Senior coroner Mary Hassell has recommended that baby monitors be manufactured with volume levels that can be locked or set to a maximum default. The warning follows the death of six-month-old Ismaeel Islam, who passed away at the Royal London Hospital on March 7, 2025. An inquest found that the infant's monitor alarm was turned down too low to be audible when he suffered a respiratory arrest on November 3, 2024. The report concluded that the child’s life could have been saved if his deterioration had been recognized immediately. Ms. Hassell has issued a Prevention of Future Deaths report to Masimo UK, the equipment manufacturer, which has 56 days to respond.
