Could Arsene Wenger Run For FIFA Presidency Against Gianni Infantino?
· Sports · BBC Sport, BBC News
Senior figures within European football have told BBC Sport they want former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to run as a surprise candidate against FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Infantino faces mounting pressure ahead of a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich following the Fifa Forward Enterprise scheme and governance controversies. Wenger has served as FIFA's head of global development since 2019 and attended a dinner with Infantino in Zurich ahead of the talks. The 76-year-old former manager has not commented on whether he will challenge Infantino for the presidency. Meanwhile, Infantino is widely expected to be re-elected unopposed for a fourth and final term next year due to strong backing in Africa, South America, and Oceania.
Why it matters
A potential leadership challenge involving a high-profile figure like Arsene Wenger could reshape the governance and future direction of world football's governing body.
