Court Allows Two‑Day Police Custody for Rajamahendravaram Hit‑and‑Run Suspects

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express, Times of India

A Rajamahendravaram court on Wednesday, Aug 7, granted two‑day police custody to hit‑and‑run accused Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards. The suspects were transferred to judicial custody in Rajahmundry Central Prison on Aug 7, where they will remain until Aug 21. Police officer ASP Patil Devaraj Manish and the investigation officer will investigate the incident that took place on Aug 3, when the accused allegedly struck a two‑wheeler twice and then ran over the passenger, Dr Kanike Priyanka. Priyanka, a first‑year postgraduate student at GSL Medical College, was declared brain‑dead on the same day and died on Aug 7 after being shifted to a private hospital in Secunderabad. A case has been registered against the accused under Section 105 of BNS for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Why it matters

The decision fixes the legal status of the accused for the immediate investigation period, affecting the timeline of the court case that will ultimately determine liability for the death of Dr. Priyanka.
