Coventry City sign Taiwo Awoniyi for £9m

· Sports · BBC Sport

Coventry City signed 29‑year‑old Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for £9 million. He joins the club ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal, the first top‑flight fixture for Coventry in 25 years. Awoniyi left Forest after a guard of honour; he played 103 games and scored 23 goals before being omitted from the Europa League squad. The transfer follows earlier acquisitions of Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Caleb Yirenkyi. Awoniyi was Forest’s record signing in 2022 for £17.2 million before a serious injury in May 2025 sidelined him.

Why it matters

The signing bolsters Coventry’s attack as they enter the Premier League, providing experience and goal‑scoring ability that could be decisive in their struggle to avoid relegation.
