CPI and CPI(M) Trade Barbs Over Deputy Opposition Leader Post in Keralam

A public row has erupted within Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front as the CPI and CPI(M) spar over the post of Deputy Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly. CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam hit back at CPI(M) State secretariat member C.N. Mohanan, who in the party mouthpiece Deshabhimani accused the CPI of seeking to drive a division within the LDF. Viswam alleged that the CPI(M) had sided with "extreme right-wing parties" in the early 1970s. Adding to the tension, IUML national vice-president K.P.A. Majeed wrote in the CPI mouthpiece Chandrika that the CPI represents true Communist ideals and is being forced to play second fiddle to the CPI(M). Majeed praised the C. Achutha Menon-led governments in which the CPI partnered with the Congress and IUML, arguing that the land reforms of that era laid the foundation for the Kerala Model of development.
