CRPF Considers Restoring Army Ranks Abolished 30 Years Ago to Ease Promotion Stagnation

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

The CRPF is considering the reintroduction of the military ranks of lance naik and naik, which were abolished 30 years ago, to address severe promotion stagnation. Headquarters has asked field formations across the country to conduct stakeholder meetings and obtain personnel feedback within two days. Currently, constables in the 3.25 lakh personnel-strong force face a wait of 22 to 25 years for their first promotion. The proposed change aims to provide two additional promotions before the head constable rank to boost morale and address grievances. The move is also designed to accommodate retiring Agniveers from the Army who will become eligible to join Central Armed Police Forces.

Why it matters

Restoring these ranks aims to resolve deep-seated promotion delays for over three lakh CRPF personnel and integrate retiring short-term military recruits.
