Cyclone Arnab Expected to Hit Krishna Coast; A.P. on High Alert, says Naidu

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced on Tuesday that cyclone Arnab is forecast to affect coastal districts from Srikakulam to Krishna, shifting earlier projections that placed the impact up to Bapatla. The government has placed the cyclone under red alert, activated 290 shelters, and evacuated 84,396 people while schools in the affected districts will remain closed on Wednesday. Heavy rainfall warnings include 30 cm in Srikakulam, 28 cm in West Godavari and 23 cm in Visakhapatnam, with the storm expected to cross the coast near Yanam close to Kakinada. Over 30,000 fishing boats were brought ashore, 5,000 pregnant women were moved to health centres, and 8,400 personnel are mobilised for recovery efforts. The state has also positioned 1,316 ambulances and secured 93 Andhra Pradesh boats at Gopalpur in Odisha. Officials stress that while the threat is serious, the government is fully prepared to minimise loss of life and property.

Why it matters

The cyclone directly endangers lives and livelihoods across Andhra Pradesh's coastal communities, prompting mass evacuations of over 84,000 people and closure of schools that affect thousands of children. The heavy rainfall and strong winds threaten infrastructure, fisheries and health services, while the government's extensive shelter and medical deployment aims to mitigate casualties.
