Cyclone Arnab: Over 4,800 Fishing Vessels Return Safely to Kakinada Coast

· India · The Hindu, Times of India

At least 4,800 fishing boats have suspended operations and returned safely to the Kakinada fishing harbour and other landing centres along the Andhra Pradesh coast. The mass return follows a State government advisory issued ahead of Cyclone Arnab, which is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast by October 28. Kakinada District Fisheries Officer V. Krishna Rao confirmed that marine fishing activity has been suspended for the next three days until normalcy prevails. Coast Guard authorities also intercepted and directed six boats carrying 24 people back to harbour after they ventured into the sea on Sunday despite the cyclone alert. Additionally, district officials in East Godavari and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema have suspended fishing in the Godavari river due to warnings of heavy rain and strong winds over the next 72 hours.

Why it matters

The swift grounding of thousands of fishing vessels prevents potential marine casualties as Cyclone Arnab approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast. The mandatory suspension safeguards fisherfolk from severe weather hazards expected over the next three days.
