· India · The Hindu, India Today, Indian Express
State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha has discussed contingency plans with State Disaster Management Authority Managing Director Prakhar Jain as Cyclone Arnab approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast. The India Meteorological Department reported that the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal strengthened into Cyclone Arnab on October 26, 2026. At 5:30 a.m. on Monday, the system was centered about 650 km east-southeast of Visakhapatnam and moving west at 15 kmph. Mr. Punetha stated that the Commission hopes to proceed with the November 1 municipal polls if the state government restores normalcy within two days of landfall. However, a final decision on rescheduling the urban local body elections will depend on the actual devastation caused by the storm.
Why it matters
The cyclone threatens the electoral schedule for urban local bodies across Andhra Pradesh, forcing election authorities to weigh public safety against polling timelines in coastal districts.
