Daler Mehndi stopped at Kunjapuri Fair over alcohol during Navratri

· Entertainment · Times of India, Indian Express

Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi was performing at the Kunjapuri Fair in Uttarakhand's Tehri district when state cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted his act, objecting that singing after drinking alcohol was inappropriate for the Durga Mata Navratri programme. Uniyal told the singer the event was dedicated to Goddess Durga and that performers must respect the occasion's dignity. The minister also said he had invited Mehndi to entertain the crowd but felt the singer was making a fool of the gathering. A video of the minister walking on stage and confronting the singer has gone viral on social media. Daler Mehndi appeared to request the minister to leave the stage, but has not yet responded to the allegations as of now.

Why it matters

The incident highlights the sensitivity of religious sentiment during Navratri celebrations and the expectations placed on performers to maintain decorum at public cultural events in Uttarakhand. It also reflects the tension between entertainment and religious observance in state-organised festivals.
