DDA starts rehab for 45 slum clusters housing 1 lakh people in Delhi

· India · Indian Express, NDTV

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Wednesday initiated the rehabilitation process for over one lakh slum dwellers across 45 slum clusters in the city. The agency floated Requests for Proposals for three Transaction Advisors to prepare feasibility reports for 15 projects covering these clusters. The clusters comprise approximately 21,229 households spread over 135.74 acres of land, with the largest concentrations in Badli, Shahdara, Pitampura and Tilak Nagar. The move comes over three months after Union Home Minister Amit Shah directed DDA and DUSIB to issue tenders for slum rehabilitation under the Master Plan for Delhi-2047. The government claims there are about 675 slums in Delhi, half on central government land and half on Delhi government land. Only two in-situ rehabilitation projects — Ashok Vihar and Kalkaji — have been completed in the past decade, providing around 4,700 flats.

Why it matters

Over one lakh slum dwellers in Delhi stand to get permanent housing through this initiative, potentially improving living conditions for a significant portion of the city's urban poor. The shift to a public-private partnership model aims to accelerate a rehabilitation process that has progressed at an excruciatingly slow pace for over ten years.
