The death of 28-year-old lab worker Daria Shipilova at Russia's Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia has sparked international concern over a potential plague outbreak. Shipilova reportedly told medical staff that she accidentally broke a test tube containing live bacteria while on a field expedition to collect samples. She was hospitalized in the Shelekhov region on Tuesday and died on Thursday after exhibiting symptoms of severe pneumonia. Nearly 200 people who came into contact with her have been placed in isolation by authorities. Regional governor Igor Kobzev described the illness only as a dangerous infectious disease, while Russian officials have not officially confirmed the pathogen as plague.
