A weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression before crossing the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. The India Meteorological Department forecasts the system will make landfall between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur during the night of September 23 and the early hours of September 24. Southern Odisha is under a red alert, with authorities expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, and Koraput. Several districts have ordered the closure of schools and Anganwadi centres until September 24 as a precautionary measure. Officials have also suspended ferry services in Chilika Lake and prepared shelters to manage potential flooding and landslides.
