· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The defence ministry signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore with Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited and Goa Shipyard Limited to acquire eight next-generation corvettes for the Indian Navy, the first project in which Indian Navy-designed ships will be constructed by defence PSUs through a competitive process. The eight corvettes will complement the existing four Kamorta-class corvettes and will be equipped with state-of-the-art missiles, weapons, and sensor suites for air, surface, and sub-surface missions. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated the project will generate approximately 72 lakh person-days of employment in shipyards and 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs over the next ten years. The induction of these ships will significantly enhance the Indian Navy's operational capabilities in safeguarding maritime trade routes and conducting anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare operations.

Why it matters

The project will significantly boost India's indigenous warship design and construction capabilities while enhancing the Indian Navy's operational reach, and will generate substantial employment across shipyards and MSMEs over the next decade.
