Delhi braces for more protests as 'cockroach' group's leaders released

· India · BBC News, New York Times, ABC News (AU)

A Delhi court has released three senior leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party, including founder Abhijeet Dipke, following their detention by police on Saturday. The arrests occurred as the group attempted to hold protests seeking electoral reforms ahead of upcoming state elections. Authorities had implemented strict security measures, including the closure of 45 metro stations and the cancellation of major train services, to prevent demonstrators from reaching Jantar Mantar. The court granted the release of Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka on the condition that they refrain from breaching the peace for one year. The CJP, which is not a registered political party, has also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of voter list manipulation.

Why it matters

The movement highlights growing political activism among youth groups regarding electoral transparency and the functioning of the Election Commission ahead of crucial state elections.
