Delhi Braces for Weekend Protests with Heavy Central Forces Deployment
· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times
Delhi is bracing for major weekend protests as the Delhi Police intelligence unit anticipates gatherings of more than 50,000 people from New Delhi and adjoining states. The Ministry of Home Affairs has deployed 221 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces, comprising around 23,000 personnel, from October 8 to 12 to assist the Delhi Police. Authorities have enforced strict security measures, including the deployment of five all-women paramilitary companies, the closure of liquor vends for two days, and restrictions on room bookings in Central Delhi hotels. The protests are driven by the Opposition's demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a joint call by the Cockroach Janta Party and the All India Students’ Association for a sit-in at Jantar Mandir. The Delhi Police has denied permission for the protest, citing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
Why it matters
The massive security deployment disrupts normal traffic and business operations across Central Delhi while testing the administration's crowd-control measures against large-scale political demonstrations.
