Delhi Bus Gangrape: Driver and Conductor Arrested, DCW Seeks Punishment
· India · Times of India, NDTV
Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Lata Gupta on Monday condemned the gangrape of a 16-year-old girl inside a moving sleeper bus in Delhi and demanded strict punishment for those responsible. Police have arrested bus driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep from a bus parking area in Timarpur and seized the vehicle. According to police, the Class 11 student from Mainpuri district, Uttar Pradesh, boarded the empty sleeper bus on August 4 after getting stranded in heavy rain at Pari Chowk while travelling to meet her cousin in Noida. The accused allegedly drove the bus nearly 47 kilometres towards Kashmere Gate, raped the teenager, threatened to kill her when she resisted, and then abandoned her near the Kashmere Gate bus terminal. The bus company's manager said the driver and conductor had been instructed to take the bus to Timarpur for repairs, and the company was informed of the seizure only the next morning.
Why it matters
The case underscores the vulnerability of women travelling at night and gaps in private transport accountability, prompting the Delhi Commission for Women to push for stricter coordination between police and courts in such cases.
