Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Pitches Rs 56,000-Crore Drainage Overhaul To Centre After Heavy Waterlogging

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday said the city government is working with the Centre to fix the Capital's ageing drainage infrastructure, a day after heavy rain caused widespread waterlogging. Gupta noted that Delhi's drainage network is over 50 years old and outlined the rollout of a Rs 56,000-crore Drainage Master Plan covering water supply, sewerage, drainage, smart metering and real-time monitoring. PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said traffic police identified 169 waterlogging hotspots in 2025, with work currently under way at 60 of them and large drains being built under the master plan. Singh added that long-term plans are being drawn up for 21 locations and claimed that waterlogging has reduced compared to previous years, with no vehicles now seen submerged. Singh also said a spot is classified as waterlogged only if water remains for one to two hours, not if it is cleared within 30 minutes.
