Delhi cops allege assault, nameplates broken during CEC protest

· India · Hindustan Times, News18

Constable Devender Sandhu alleged police were peacefully asking protesters to board buses when demonstrators began pushing and pulling officers during an Opposition protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar. Several officers claimed they were kicked and attacked while detaining demonstrators, with Sandhu sustaining injuries to his waist and the back of his head. Sandhu claimed protesters first broke the officers' nameplates and snatched their caps before police were pulled from behind and pushed to the ground. DCP Shrishti Pandey later stated the targeting of uniformed personnel was a matter of concern, blaming 'some form of wrongful influence' for the behaviour of young people towards such actions.

Why it matters

Opposition MPs and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were detained while protesting the CEC's mishandling of the voting system, highlighting escalating tensions over electoral integrity. Police injuries and allegations of excessive force underscore the growing friction between law enforcement and protestors.
