Delhi Govt Allows Criminal Contempt Suit Against CJP’s Ratna Singh

· India · Indian Express, Bar and Bench

The Delhi government granted consent for a private complainant to file criminal contempt proceedings against Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) legal head Ratna Singh, who allegedly posted X remarks questioning a chief judicial magistrate’s independence. Additional Standing Counsel Amol Sinha confirmed sufficient grounds for invoking the Delhi High Court’s criminal contempt jurisdiction after lawyer Kausik Chatterjee filed the representation. The contested statements, posted on October 10, claimed the CJM was “serving the master” and performing improperly during a Saket Court hearing in a wrongful confinement case. CJP leaders were detained by Delhi Police earlier this week ahead of planned protests at Jantar Mantar. Delhi High Court will now adjudicate the contempt petition with the consent letter attached.

Why it matters

The approval of the contempt case puts senior CJP figure Ratna Singh at risk of penal action for allegedly undermining judicial authority, potentially chilling opposition voices that target judges. The case also highlights the government’s willingness to act on complaints regarding online attacks on the judiciary, and may affect the CJP’s planned protest agenda in Delhi.
