Delhi High Court Allows UK Trip for 2020 Riots Accused Natasha Narwal With Asylum Bar
· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times
The Delhi High Court granted Natasha Narwal, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, permission to travel to the UK from November 2 to December 1, 2026, for academic purposes. Narwal, released on bail in 2021 after 14 months in custody, must present a paper at SOAS and consult her PhD supervisor at the University of Warwick. The court imposed a condition that she furnish an undertaking not to seek asylum in the UK, following Delhi Police objections over extradition risks. Earlier, a trial court had denied her travel request on October 6, prompting her to approach the High Court. ASG S V Raju argued that her academic work could be conducted virtually, while Justice Amit Bansal affirmed the asylum restriction as a safeguard.
Why it matters
The ruling balances academic freedom with national security concerns, ensuring the accused cannot misuse travel to evade legal proceedings. It sets a precedent for imposing conditions on bail-related travel for individuals in high-profile cases.
