Delhi High Court Dismisses Jockey Association Plea Against Race Club Eviction

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

The Delhi High Court has dismissed a petition filed by the Jockey Association of India challenging an eviction order against the Delhi Race Club. Estate authorities issued the order on August 11, mandating that the premises on Lok Kalyan Marg be vacated within 15 days. Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar ruled the plea as not maintainable, noting that the association is not a lessee of the property. The association had argued that the eviction would disrupt the livelihoods of approximately 5,000 people, including jockeys, trainers, and stable staff. The Delhi Race Club, which occupies over 84 acres, has operated on the site since 1926.

Why it matters

The court's decision clears the way for the eviction of the Delhi Race Club, directly threatening the livelihoods of thousands of staff and the future of thoroughbred horse racing in North India.
