Delhi High Court Mandates Biometric Aadhaar for GST Registration

The Delhi High Court has directed authorities nationwide to mandate biometric Aadhaar authentication before granting any Goods and Services Tax registration. Justices Anil Kshetarpal and Shail Jain issued the order on September 8 to curb fraudulent registrations and tax evasion utilizing stolen PAN and Aadhaar credentials. The bench noted that the Ministry of Finance previously reported 2,800 fraudulent GST registrations in 2023-24 involving ₹15,085 crore in tax evasion, followed by 1,654 fraudulent registrations and ₹13,109 crore in evasion during 2024-25. The court intervened while hearing a petition from a woman whose identity was misused to create fraudulent GST accounts, resulting in over ₹4.46 crore being siphoned from her bank account. The ruling aims to plug implementation gaps that allowed fake registrations to persist despite previous announcements.
