Delhi High Court Upholds Passport Fee Hike for NRIs
· India · Times of India, Indian Express
The Delhi High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the central government's decision to increase passport fees for non-resident Indians (NRIs). The court observed that a 67% increase after 14 years is not unreasonable or exorbitant. Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma stated that fee determination falls within the government's policy domain and does not warrant judicial intervention. The petition, filed by the Pravasi Legal Cell, had alleged that the fee structure was discriminatory as NRIs pay approximately ₹11,900 compared to ₹2,500 for resident Indians.
Why it matters
The ruling confirms the government's authority to set passport fees for citizens living abroad, maintaining the current cost structure for NRIs.
